There’s a special feeling in the air when a new gardening season begins. The days are getting longer, the soil is slowly warming, and gardeners everywhere are starting to dream about what this year’s garden will become. Whether you’re a returning member or joining us for the first time this season, welcome. We’re so glad you’re here.
Gardening is about more than just growing plants. It’s about growing community. Each season brings new friendships, new knowledge, and plenty of opportunities to learn from one another. Our returning members help carry forward the wisdom of past seasons, while our new members bring fresh ideas and excitement that make the garden even more vibrant.
If you’re new to the garden, we encourage you to introduce yourself to your neighbors. Community gardens thrive when people share tips, swap seeds, lend a hand, and celebrate each other’s successes. Don’t hesitate to ask questions. Gardening is a lifelong learning process, and even experienced gardeners discover something new every year.
For those gardening in Northern Virginia, the start of the season usually begins in earnest in March and April. Cool-season crops like lettuce, spinach, peas, radishes, and kale can often be planted as soon as the soil is workable. These early crops thrive in cooler temperatures and can give you a head start while we wait for warmer weather.
Warm-season crops like tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and squash will need to wait until after the danger of frost has passed. In our region, that’s typically around mid-April to early May, though it can vary from year to year. Keeping an eye on local weather forecasts is always a good idea.
If you’re looking for guidance as you plan your garden, there are several excellent local resources available:
Virginia Cooperative Extension offers region-specific planting calendars, soil testing services, and gardening advice tailored to our climate. Their website is an excellent place to start if you’re unsure about planting dates or plant care.
The Master Gardeners of Northern Virginia also provide workshops, plant clinics, and educational resources throughout the season. Their expertise can be incredibly helpful, especially for new gardeners.
Local garden centers and plant sales hosted by community organizations are another great way to find plants suited to our region. They’re also wonderful opportunities to meet other gardeners and learn about varieties that grow well locally.

Looking Ahead to the Season
As the season gets underway, remember that gardens grow best when they’re tended with patience and curiosity. Not every seed will sprout. Not every plant will thrive. But every season brings new lessons and small victories along the way.
We’re excited to welcome our new members and reconnect with returning gardeners. Over the next few months, we’ll share tips, resources, and opportunities to get involved. Most importantly, we look forward to watching the garden come alive with fresh growth, colorful flowers, and abundant harvests.
Here’s to a wonderful growing season ahead. Happy gardening!
