Growing Green: Why Organic Gardening Matters at Holmes Run

At Holmes Run Community Garden, we believe that gardening should nurture the earth as much as it feeds our tables. That’s why we’re proudly committed to organic gardening practices — for healthier plants, a cleaner environment, and a safer, more sustainable community.

But what exactly is organic gardening, and why does it matter? Let’s dig in.

🌿 What Is Organic Gardening?

Organic gardening means working with nature — not against it. It’s about growing food without synthetic chemicals, and instead using natural methods to build healthy soil, manage pests, and support strong plants.

At Holmes Run, our policy is clear:🚫 No chemical pesticides, fungicides, herbicides, or insecticides.Only organic practices and materials may be used.

This helps keep our garden safe for pollinators, people, and the planet.

🌎 Why Go Organic?

  • Protects Local Ecosystems: Chemical runoff harms beneficial insects, birds, and nearby waterways. Organic gardening helps keep our shared green space safe and vibrant.

  • Supports Soil Health: Healthy soil is the foundation of a thriving garden. Organic practices improve soil structure, boost nutrients, and promote microbial life.

  • Grows Safer Food: When you grow organically, you know exactly what’s (not) going into your veggies — no synthetic residues, just pure, garden-fresh goodness.

  • Builds Community Resilience: Organic gardens foster education, stewardship, and self-sufficiency — all things we love to promote at Holmes Run.

🌱 How to Get Started with Organic Gardening

1. Feed the Soil, Not Just the Plants

Healthy soil grows healthy plants. Add compost, aged manure, or organic mulches to enrich your soil naturally.

2. Choose Organic Seeds and Plants

Look for seeds and starts labeled “organic” or “non-treated.” These are grown without synthetic chemicals and are often more resilient.

3. Embrace Companion Planting

Some plants naturally support each other. For example, marigolds deter pests, and basil can help protect tomatoes. Strategic planting is your first line of defense.

4. Welcome the Good Bugs

Ladybugs, lacewings, and praying mantises are natural pest control. Avoid killing them with chemicals — instead, attract them with flowering plants and keep their habitats safe.

5. Mulch the Smart Way

Organic mulch (like straw, shredded leaves, or untreated wood chips) suppresses weeds, retains moisture, and adds nutrients as it breaks down.

6. Monitor & Hand-Pick Pests

It may not be glamorous, but simply checking your plants regularly and removing pests by hand can go a long way in keeping them healthy.

7. Use Organic Solutions if Needed

If a pest problem gets out of hand, use approved organic remedies like neem oil, insecticidal soap, or diatomaceous earth. Always read labels to ensure they're OMRI-listed (Organic Materials Review Institute).

🌼 Our Garden, Our Responsibility

At Holmes Run Community Garden, going organic isn’t just a policy — it’s a shared commitment. By choosing organic methods, we’re protecting the environment, supporting biodiversity, and creating a space where everyone (from kids to bees!) can safely enjoy the garden.

Together, let’s grow greener — one plot at a time.
